Is Crater Lake Really Closed?

If you’ve been searching “Is Crater Lake closed?” — you’re not alone. Over the past year, thousands of travelers across the country read headlines about a closure at Crater Lake National Park and jumped to the wrong conclusion. The park itself is absolutely open. What closed is something much more specific — and understanding the difference could save your Southern Oregon trip.
What Actually Happened: The Cleetwood Cove Trail Closure
Cleetwood Cove Trail is a steep, 1.1-mile path that descends from the Rim Drive down to the shoreline of Crater Lake — the only place in the entire park where visitors could walk up to the water, swim, fish, or board a scenic boat tour to Wizard Island. It’s one of the most popular trails in Oregon, with roughly 54,000 visitors making the trek each year.
After years of heavy use, the trail developed serious safety problems. Retaining walls were failing, the pumice-rich soil was eroding rapidly, and dangerous rockfall zones had developed along the route. The marina and boat dock below — which failed structurally back in 2016 — also needed complete replacement. The National Park Service made the call: the trail needed a full rehabilitation, not a patch job.
Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with the project expected to span three construction seasons through 2028 — since extreme winter snowfall limits work to a narrow summer window each year. During construction, the Cleetwood Cove Trail and boat tours will be unavailable.
Why So Much Confusion?
The headlines didn’t help. Phrases like “Crater Lake is closing” or “access to Crater Lake cut off” were technically referring to shoreline access — but most readers understandably interpreted them as the park shutting down entirely. Social media amplified the confusion, and suddenly people who had been planning trips for years were canceling reservations and crossing Crater Lake off their bucket lists.
As a Southern Oregon tour operator, we’ve spoken with countless visitors who almost skipped the park entirely based on this misunderstanding. Please don’t make that mistake. The iconic views that make Crater Lake one of the most photographed places in America are still fully accessible — and they’re absolutely breathtaking.
What You Can Still Experience at Crater Lake
The honest truth is that the vast majority of Crater Lake’s magic has always been experienced from the rim — not from the shoreline. The incomparable cobalt blue of the water, the volcanic peaks of Wizard Island rising from the surface, the sweeping panoramas of the caldera walls — all of it is fully visible and more spectacular than ever.
Why Now Is a Great Time to Visit Crater Lake
Counterintuitively, the next few years may actually be a wonderful time to visit Crater Lake. The misconception about a full park closure has kept some visitors away — meaning the park is less crowded than usual at the iconic overlooks and on its many hiking trails. Parking at Rim Village, historically a challenge in summer, has been more manageable. The park is as beautiful as ever, and you’ll have a more peaceful experience than in peak years past.
Our guided tours from Medford and Ashland visit the park’s most spectacular viewpoints, and our guides provide rich context about the geology, history, and ecology of this extraordinary place — an experience that no trail to the water’s edge can replace.
If you’re visiting Southern Oregon and want to experience Crater Lake without the hassle of navigating winding mountain roads yourself, our guided day tours handle all the logistics — leaving from Medford or Ashland with a knowledgeable local guide who knows every viewpoint, every overlook, and every story the park has to tell.
